About Abu Simbel

Welcome to Abu Simbel

Abu Simbel is a day-trip from Aswan (3 hours by road or 1 hour by flight) but it’s worth every second of the journey. The twin temples of Ramses II and Nefertari, carved out of solid sandstone in 1264 BC, were famously rescued from the rising waters of Lake Nasser in the 1960s — sawn into 1050 pieces and reassembled 65 meters higher up the cliff. Twice a year (Feb 22 and Oct 22), the rising sun penetrates 60 meters into the inner sanctuary and illuminates the statues of the gods — an astronomical alignment the ancient Egyptians designed 3300 years ago.

Top things to see & do

5 1 hour

Great Temple of Ramses II

Four seated colossi of Ramses II, each 20 metres tall, carved into the mountain. The inner sanctum was carefully aligned so the sunrise lights three of four statues on Feb 22 and Oct 22 — the pharaoh's coronation and birthday.

Small Temple of Nefertari

Ramses II's temple to his favorite queen — one of only a handful of ancient Egyptian temples dedicated to a queen. Facade statues show Nefertari at equal size to the king.

Things to do here

🌅

Sun Alignment Festival (Feb 22 / Oct 22)

Twice a year at sunrise, the light penetrates 60 metres to illuminate Ramses II, Ra-Horakhty, and Amun (not Ptah, god of darkness). Book a year ahead — hotels sell out.

🌙

Sound & Light Show

Nightly narration in 5 rotating languages, projected on the mountain and temple facades. Only reason to spend the night here.

✈️

Fly from Aswan (Egyptair)

A 45-min flight beats the 3.5-hr road transfer if time is tight — one flight daily, tight ground schedule.

🚗

Convoy Road Trip Across the Desert

The 280 km road transfer starts 4am — a straight shot across the Sahara. Sunrise over the desert is the reward.

Lake Nasser Overnight Cruise

A 3-4 day slow cruise from Aswan to Abu Simbel — the only way to experience the temples with far fewer day-trippers.
