Philae Temple (Agilkia Island)
Dedicated to Isis. The entire temple was relocated stone-by-stone to Agilkia Island by UNESCO in the 1970s to save it from the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
Where Nubian culture meets ancient majesty.
Aswan is a destination on Egypt's Nile cruise and tour routes, home to Philae Temple (Agilkia Island) and Abu Simbel Temples (day trip). The best time to visit is October to April.
Aswan is Egypt’s southernmost gem — quieter, gentler, more African than the rest of the country. The Nile narrows here between granite cliffs and pink-tinted islands. Felucca sailboats glide past Elephantine Island, the Nubian Museum tells the story of a culture older than the pharaohs, and the Old Cataract Hotel (where Agatha Christie wrote Death on the Nile) still serves afternoon tea on its terrace.

Ramses II's twin temples, carved into the mountain and famously relocated 65m higher when Lake Nasser filled. Interior alignment lights the inner sanctum twice a year (Feb 22 & Oct 22).
The 1970 engineering feat that tamed the Nile and created the world's largest artificial lake. Includes the Soviet-Egyptian friendship monument.
A single-piece 42m obelisk still attached to the bedrock — abandoned when it cracked. Shows exactly how ancient Egyptians quarried granite.
Colourful Nubian community on the west bank — henna, hibiscus tea, home visits, and Nubian handicrafts. Best in the afternoon.
Ptolemaic-Roman temple to the Nubian sun god Mandulis, also relocated to escape Lake Nasser. Small island near the High Dam.
October to April
Mild winters (15–28°C), hot summers (30–42°C). Less humid than Luxor, very dry. Cool evenings even in summer.
The classic Aswan sunset — glide between Nile islands as felucca captains sing Nubian songs.
Twice a year the rising sun aligns to light Ramses II and 3 of the 4 statues in the inner sanctuary — a designed astronomical event.
One of the few safe stretches of Nile for a dip. Nubian eco-lodges arrange it.
High tea on the terrace where Agatha Christie wrote "Death on the Nile" — arguably the best sunset seat in Egypt.
A short desert crossing from the ruined 7th-century Coptic monastery back to the felucca landing.
Traditional tar drums and doumbeks at a Nubian home or the Nubian Museum garden.
