Choosing Your Nile Cruise: 3 Nights, 4 Nights, or 7?

Choosing Your Nile Cruise: 3 Nights, 4 Nights, or 7?

The three standard Nile cruise lengths each tell a different story. After 15 years of helping travelers choose, here’s the straightforward breakdown.

3 nights Aswan to Luxor — the classic

The most popular option, and for good reason. You sail downstream (gentler), visit Philae, Kom Ombo, Edfu, the Esna Lock, Karnak, and Luxor Temple. Total cost is 30% less than the 4-night, and you fit it into a 5-6 day Egypt trip easily.

Best for: First-time visitors with limited time. Anyone combining Egypt with another destination (Jordan, Israel, Dubai).

Skip if: You want to see the Valley of the Kings without rushing. The 3-night cruise leaves you only a few hours in Luxor at the end — enough for Karnak but not for the West Bank.

4 nights Luxor to Aswan — the value pick

Adds a full day for Luxor’s West Bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon) before sailing upstream. The extra night, extra day, and West Bank monuments cost only 20% more than the 3-night.

Best for: Travelers who specifically want to see Tut’s tomb and the Valley of the Kings. Anyone with 7-10 days in Egypt total.

7 nights round trip from Luxor — the complete experience

Includes everything from the 4-night, plus Dendera and Abydos (both magnificent, both skipped by 90% of Egypt visitors), plus a full extra day at Karnak. Costs 2.4x the 3-night.

Best for: Travelers flying long-haul who want the trip to feel complete. Egyptology enthusiasts. Repeat visitors who’ve done the 3-night and want to see what they missed.

Bonus: 5-night dahabiya

A different kind of cruise entirely. Wind-powered traditional sailboat, max 20 guests, slower pace, remote temples (El Kab, Gebel Silsila) that the big ships can’t reach. Costs roughly the same per night as a 5-star motor cruise.

Best for: Honeymoons, milestone celebrations, anyone tired of cruise-ship dining lines.

The decision tree

  • 5–6 days in Egypt → 3 nights
  • 7–10 days in Egypt + Valley of the Kings is a must → 4 nights
  • 10+ days in Egypt + you want it all → 7 nights
  • Honeymoon or special occasion → dahabiya (5 nights)
